There are subtleties in life we rarely notice until they're absent, like the noises that create the soundscape of our daily lives. I started thinking about all of the sounds I hear on a regular basis at home, especially the ones Lacie makes. They are the ones that would make the loudest silence if they were to go away.
The list goes on, and I'm sure there are more I could only notice if they went away. I can't imagine a life without them, because it would mean a life without Lacie. I was out of town last week, and even the short absence reminded me how grateful I am for the life we get to share.
I think my tendency is to move quickly through the day and often miss the the beauty of the constants in our settings, like the sounds I described. As I reflected on my days to come up with this list, my heart warmed as my brain recalled what I've subconsciously been hearing all along.
So what's playing in your background? What do you hear? What are the sounds that you can appreciate now and that you might one day mourn the absence of?
You haven't missed your calling
From where I sit in this hospital waiting room
Accept the invitation to live
The lighted window
It was worth it
The subtle sounds of a life together
Made for the now-what
When holidays are hard
Sharing in our suffering
To my doubting friend
Ten years down the road
How long, Lord?
A season of doubt
