What if everything God has surrounded us with is a miracle in and out itself, but we’ve just lost the eyes to see that the ordinary is the extraordinary? We keep waiting for God to “show up” or “speak to us” when God is saying, “I’m right here!”
We’ve been conditioned to look past it. The sunrise and sunset aren’t any less remarkable because they’re regular. How dull have our senses grown, that we’ve lost our childlike wonder, where the magic of a simple backyard is unlocked by the imagination and whimsy of an unburdened mind?
I’ve recently been taken to that quiet place of awe and wonder as a result of simply hanging bird feeders in our back yard. All throughout the day hummingbirds, cardinals, jay birds, finches, sparrows, and a whole host of other birds I’m probably misnaming come to partake of our man-made buffet.
There’s just something stilling to the heart to witness such a small, special pocket of the universe’s beauty in nature. Right here, right now, immediately available, directly in front of me, easy to miss if I was more concerned about how much work there is to be done in the yard.
